HFHF Educational Trips

Since 2000, HFHF has increasingly made its mark on the educational front in the small mountain village of Zorangè.

The primary school housed in a shack has grown into a much larger construction (still in progress) with rooms for each class, a library, a courtyard, cafeteria, nurse’s office, and even secure storage rooms.

The Foundation pays a small, but excellent staff of Haitians who need nurturing and development as teachers. Thus far, our major annual trips have allowed us to bring school supplies and teaching materials to supplement lessons. However, workshops and activities dedicated to teaching the staff skills impact the school and students – long after the paper has been written on, and the chalk is dust.

Another one of HFHF’s goals is to continue branching out and similarly support currently running schools in the surrounding communities. It goes back to one of our foundational beliefs – help Haiti to help Haiti – we don’t want to always create something new when we can educate and lift up others already trying to achieve the same as us. We see this goal, among our other education goals, being achieved through the funds raised from our Child Sponsorship Program and Scholarship Fund.

    Other initiatives and goals:
  • Language Lessons – Teach English and learn Creole. Volunteers can go to Zorangé and/or Bainet for an extended period of time to teach English lessons to the teachers, and students and the volunteers will in turn receive Creole lessons from the teachers.
  • Music Class – HFHF currently has no staff member with skill sets to incorporate music into the curriculum. It would be great to have someone that is called to minister in music and volunteers for an extended time in Zorangé and/or Bainet to teach music to a select few--then these few will become future teachers and trainers in music.
  • Environmental Education – We need scientists and environmental engineers to help the natives in soil preservation and reforestation. This education is about survival – people only cut trees because they need to make charcoal as a source of fuel. Until the Haitians are given alternatives, they will continue to cut trees because they know of no better method.

HFHF Medical Trips

HFHF has facilitated at least one major medical trip a year since 2001 – each year caring for more Haitians who had never seen a doctor or received professional healthcare until that moment.

HFHF has been steadfast in setting and achieving their goals for the healthcare of the Sud Est Department in the country. The accomplishments are amazing to review: first, meeting more than a thousand patients during annual three-day clinics, to staffing and running a full-time medical clinic and pharmacy in Zorangè, and now constructing a new, fully-functioning hospital in Bainet.

We’re moving toward more focused trips with smaller amounts of travelers, but aren’t completely counting out major medical clinic trips. Specializations of interest include cardiology, gastroenterology, gynecology and obstetrics, optometry, pediatrics, and more. Specialist trips allow the participants to really take their time in Haiti to teach, develop, and nurture the Haitian staff – the hands-on experience and knowledge is invaluable to the Haitians.

    Other initiatives and goals:
  • Specialist Teams – Once the hospital is operational, we will coordinate with surgeons and other specialties to take them to Haiti on a monthly basis, based on identified needs by the Haitian medical team. These teams of specialists will be staying in Bainet and provide special care to the patients that have been identified and screened prior to the specialists' arrival.
  • Training Trips – We will conduct trips to train HFHF medical staff and other medical personnel from surrounding states to help and empower them to make a difference in the lives of the people in their country.
  • CHW Initiative – We are developing a Community Health Worker (CHW) program in the nine sections of the Bainet area. Each section will have two to three CHWs that will be able to meet and hear of any health issues or emergencies, teach the patients about health maintenance, and direct them to care. This program will transform the country from a place where a simple wound becomes deadly, to one that is promptly and accurately taken care of before it has a chance to get worse.

Whether you’re a medical professional or just interested in the health of Haiti, medical trips with HFHF are great opportunities.

HFHF Spiritual Trips

The spiritual health of the Haitians is even more important to HFHF than all else.

After we’ve provided medical care, helped feed and quench thirst, and provided education, it allows the Haitians’ hearts to open more to the love of God.

We’ve previously had open-air revivals, shown the Jesus film on a big screen in the middle of a field, and still support the village church and its pastor in Zorangè. Now, we are looking to reach out to other communities like Bainet, reaching and teaching the people and leaders there.

    Other initiatives and goals:
  • Teaching Seminars – We will conduct seminars and conferences for our church leaders and leaders from churches in other communities.
  • Revivals – We will hold revivals and crusades in partnership with the local Haitian church leaders in the communities in which we are working.
  • Bible Training Center – We plan to open the HFHF Bible Training Center in Bainet where volunteers can come and teach. This will eventually grow to other parts of the country, in an effort to raise Haitian leaders that will serve as missionaries throughout Haiti.
  • Church Planting – We will help build and plant churches where and when they are needed.

HFHF Construction Trips

With the acquisition of two buildings in Bainet and plans to retrofit for a fully-functioning hospital and dormitory, there is a lot of construction and labor to be done!

Our initial goal of $1 million dollars will help us with the retrofitting cost and the operational expenses of the hospital – find out how we plan to raise the money!

As the funds start to come into HFHF (and even before) we need willing and able people to help in a variety of capacities and trades: water treatment, construction, architecture, engineering, and more. We’ll also specifically need volunteers and professionals to travel as needed for maintenance and repairs of the HFHF facilities – these trips will also be educational opportunities for the Haitian workers.

And of course, we’ll never stop looking for who doesn't mind picking up a hammer and nail and working hard! If you think you could help in any way with these goals and initiatives, let us know!

HFHF Sports & Recreation Trips

Sports and Recreation is an area that HFHF uses to take all different age groups and help foster relationships with them – especially to create bonds with the younger generation.

In 2009, HFHF inaugurated an interscholastic sports and academic league that connects students with sports in a positive way. Academic standards must be kept in order for students to participate, so the program encourages strength in education first.

To continue the work with sports and rec in Haiti, we plan on having volunteers with skills in soccer, basketball, tennis, etc. that will conduct camps in HFHF schools and invite other schools in the area.

Let HFHF know if you have any ideas and are interested in being involved with this part of the Foundation!
